If you needed any more proof that college football has become a cutthroat business, look no further than what is happening to Florida State’s Coach Bobby Bowden. Make no mistake, Coach Bowden built Florida State. That school’s football team was nothing before he got there. He led that school to heights of success and brought millions and millions of dollars to school’s coffers. But in today’s world, the recent downturn for the program has the powers that be at FSU forcing Bowden out. Word of warning to FSU… be careful what you wish for. Look at the track record of programs after the coach legend has left. Some go on to further glory. But most get worse for a long time.

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009Ole Miss Cant Live Up to the Hype
Friday, September 25th, 2009Every year it seems that there are a few teams that receive a ton of preseason love from the pundits. Despite the fact that Ole Miss hasn’t really looked all that impressive this year, they had managed to turn their pre-season expectations into a #4 ranking. All that came crashing down last night as the Rebels were dominated by the Gamecocks. Already this year we’ve seen pre-season titans Oregon and Oklahoma State get exposed, and now the Rebels join their ranks. It just goes to show how hard it really is to move into the elite of the elite in college football.
Refund for Fan
Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009After Oregon’s embarrassing loss and behavior to Boise State, one fan asked for his money back. Oregon grad Tony Seminary confirmed that he had emailed an invoice to head coach Chip Kelly requesting a refund for the expenses incurred on the trip. Kelly sent Seminary a check a few days later for $439. Charlie Weiss and Al Groh better hope that doesn’t become mandatory.
Uncontrolled Emotion and Stupidity leaves Blount a Cooked Duck
Saturday, September 5th, 2009The University of Oregon announced Friday it had suspended senior running back LeGarrette Blount for the remainder of the season, including a potential bowl game. The suspension ends Blount’s college career, since this was his last year of eligibility. It is a shame that Blount’s uncontrolled emotion and stupidity landed him on the sideline for good this time, and most likely ruined his chances of a shot in the NFL.
The Ducks’ (now former) starting running back was expected to have a huge senior season. He rushed for 1,002 yards and 17 touchdowns last year—his first in Eugene. Blount was named to the Doak Walker watch list during the summer. The Doak Walker award goes to the nation’s best running back.
Yes, it is clear that Hout provoked Blount by tapping him on the shoulder and verbally taunting him, but Blount’s actions clearly crossed the line. Blount should have expected a little bit of trash talking to come his way. Before the game, he was quoted in a Boise newspaper saying that his Ducks “owed the Broncos a (butt) whoopin’,” after last season’s 37-32 loss to Boise State in Eugene.
The University of Oregon’s decision to suspend Blount is right for a few reasons.
For one, this was already Blount’s second chance. He was suspended by the team during spring practices this past offseason.
Everyone should be afforded a second chance, but not necessarily third and fourth chances.
Secondly, if not for the restraint shown by the half-dozen or so Broncos that surrounded Hout, this could have turned into Miami-FIU Pt. 2. This could have easily turned into a 200-man melee and Blount would have understandably received the lions’ share of the blame.
Lastly, Blount’s ballistic reaction after being taunted by the home fans was maniacal. The scene in Boise could have gotten even uglier had police and coaches not restrained a volatile Blount and prevented him from going Ron Artest on the crowd.
While Blount’s NFL dreams are likely over, he should be grateful that the University of Oregon is allowing him to remain on scholarship.
